I'm receiving tons of postings on US fighter designations, many
contradictory and with small errors.  This is a recurrent topic
in sci.military, and uses a lot of bandwidth each time it comes up.

Could I impose on one of our more knowledgeable aviation buffs to
compile from these postings a factually-correct and, to the extent
it's possible, brief synopsis of these designations, and post that
next time this topic arises ?
