For the latest in imaging DNA with STM, see R J Driscoll et al.,
Atomic-scale imaging of DNA using scanning tunnelling microscopy,
Nature 346:294-6 (19 July 1990). The authors conclude that "With
substantial technological advances, sequencing of DNA by STM may 
be possible."
