What a co-incidence, I just spoke with Scott Elmenhurst at Raima last week. First, db_VISTA III is only sold directly by Raima. The license cost varies depending on the types of CPU's involved. Also, as I understand it can not be used to create any type of competitive database product such as an interpreter or linkable run-time library. However, for things such as "canned" vertical market software, etc. there are no royalties or distribution limitations. db_FILE is actually an older (c. 1986?) version of db_VISTA that is sold by re-sellers such as "Programmer's ________", etc. As an eariler version, it is a true subset (and in theory 100% upwardly compatable) with db_VISTA III. I see that db_RETRIEVE, an SQL query and report tool, is currently bundled with db_FILE. The list price of the single-user version of db_FILE is $295, with multi-user at $595. Both include C source and free telephone support. I would suspect similar license policies as db_VISTA III would apply. Also, you can apply a large percentage of the db_FILE cost toward purchasing db_VISTA III. As far as versions, db_FILE 2.2 seems to be the latest. I can not speak for db_VISTA III versions.
