I've been running the X11R3 supplied with HP-UX 7.0, standard Emacs 18.55, and the Emacs running on a HP9000/845 and using an Apollo DN3500 as a display, there's no problem. Everything works fine with both no local definitions and my "full" .emacs stuff. I have heard of problems on Series 300 - are you perhaps running on one of those? -- Kim --- "That's what I think."
