You can download the BGI toolkit from the Compuserve BPROGA forum (Borland Programming Forum A) for the cost of connect time to Compuserve. It comes complete with documentation, a VGA 256 color mode driver (though no source code) and a demonstration driver that textually prints graphics commands so you can see what's happening within the driver. The demonstration driver is written in Turbo C, source code included. *Warning* Yes, writing a device driver is indeed a great deal of work. The documentation is complete but occassionally vague.
