This unit is internally an Exabyte 8mm drive, but has a Pertec adapter internal to the unit, so looks like a regular 1/2" 9Track tape drive to your system (but it's a REAL long tape--2 Gigabytes/tape, for about $18/tape). No special software is needed to make your Pertec board replace or daisy chain to a regular 9track drive. Timing tests on a Pyramid have clocked about 200k/second using dd with a 30K block size. The unit is ideal for people who don't want to sit around while they mount 18 120Mb 9track tapes, when you can instead just insert 1 8mm tape and let your system do the rest.
