I would advice you not to try to write a full X.400- interface
from the beginning, but to do your interface based on
something already existing.

Christian Huitema in France has written an SMTP<->X.400 gateway,
which you might get from him and use as a basis for your work.
We are doing that ourselves in order to get X.400 to our
mail system.
