Simple and trivial problem which is driving me up the wall.....

I'm trying to hook a modem up to an apollo .... I have the /etc/ttys
file set up for D2400 ...and I did a Kill -1 1.

I do a echo ATDT >/dev/tty01  and see the lights flash but I get no tone from
the speaker nor does it seem to pick the phone off the hook.  Since apollos
have their own nuances...does any have an idea what is up?
