I just remembered that my son had a MacSE sitting in the next room (until he goes back to college next week) Soooo, I plugged my new CMS 60 Meg drive into his computer and used the MACINTOSH utilities that came with it to reformat it to 1:1. Worked like a charm. No "error 21". Performance: 1.92 ms per block linear read. roughly as good as any others in the InCider July article. 6 (count them, SIX) times better than when I received it from the mail order dealer (Quality Computers) who claims to know what they are doing. Two questions: a) WHY didn't QC do it right (they knew I had a GS and had bought the HS SCSI DMA interface, and b) WHY doesn't there seem to be a SINGLE formatting utility available for that combination that will get the interleave right? sure, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but ...
