We have an HP 600A CD-ROM drive as a stand-alone peripheral (i.e.
it's not one module in a C2212A mass storage system).  I have
played audio CDs in this without any difficulty; HP even provide
a socket for a headphone jack.
Incidentally, I was told that the 600A CD player is made by Philips
but perhaps my informant was trying to please me!
