I have also been very satisfied with System V/386 R3.2 (originally from BellTech, now Intel). I have been using it for software development, TeX, and number crunching. The system is very stable (virtually no crashes, very few bugs, and no significant memory leaks in the kernel) and feels reasonably fast.
