Actually, I believe that the state machine for the dragon allows one item to be taken before you get flamed, the idea being that you need to be able to get the shield without getting toasted in the process. After that, I believe that all important (i.e. guarded) items get you torched when you drag them. And I can't claim all of the credit for Deja Vu II by a long shot!
