Question:  Is there some utility that will allow me to clean out my
desktop file WITHOUT losing the GetInfo comments??

Answer:  Check out Anton Rang's "Fix Desktop" utility.  It's at sumex,
/info-mac/util/fix-desktop-20.hqx

I'm not sure if it's share/freeware, but it works!
