All-purpose mouse hint from hell -- I've done it with Sun mice, Mac mice,
and even DEC mice....

If the pads get too sticky or too worn, remove them.  Replace them with 
half of a velcro strip (the loop half, not the hook half.)  You can usually
get self-sticking vecro by the yard at any five-and-dime.

The velcro will make the mouse sit a little higher than the normal pads
make it, but that usually doesn't interfere with optical or physical
traction.
