BUT: What must one do to get select() to work? If I use the system's built-in select, I can't run subprocesses (shell, display-time == loadst), but TCP/IP connections work fine. If I use the substitute code shipped with emacs, loadst will work, but shell won't. Also TCP/IP fails to detect at least a disconnect and it also slows down on reading incoming data from sockets.
