The "cool" thing about TIFF is that it isn't a single standard...  it's a
whole bunch of unknown "standards" wrapped up under one name.  Aaack!

If you want standard, don't pick TIFF.

By the way, don't you want/need a format that has a convenient ASCII
representation (ala bitmap format)?
