 Bill, the problem may be with your batteries; NiCads need to
 periodically be completely discharged (and then recharged) or they
 forget how to hold a complete charge.

 Also, NiCads are slightly lower in voltage than carbon-zinc or
 alkalines; this may be part of the problem, too.
