It's tough, but USENET can't stay backwards compatible to A news all its life. This isn't a bad idea at all. What about eliminating Path:, and replacing it with something from SMTP, the Received: header? Then there could be all kinds of information in there, about how long it took for the message to propagate, where it went, how it got introduced into the news stream (it might make spoofing a *little* easier to track). Also, we wouldn't get those super-long Path: lines that occasionally get split and propagate old articles all over the net. The only problem I can see with this is the increase in size for messages. On the flip side, has anyone else noticed that many people these days are putting their FQDN into the Path: header? I'll bet if everyone who could do this did, we would see from the Path: many easy ways to send reply mail.
