It can be fixed and probably improved. The Garrott Brothers provide a cartridge repair service which allows a new diamond to be fitted to *any* phono cartridge. These people actually put the cartridge under a microscope, pull out the old diamond, and fit a new one. The new diamonds are reputed to be the world's finest. In addition they can fit new cantilevers (Boron or Aluminium) and repair all sorts of damage. In all cases the Garrott Brothers claim they can better the original factory specifications. I don't work for them, but for many years my Supex 1000SDX has been returned from the dead (broken cantilevers, worn out stylus, broken windings). Each time it has returned working beautifully and, to my ears, sonically improved. Apologies if all you people in netland know about this service, but if you do not, here are the details: Garrott Brothers Tantawangalo Lane Candelo N.S.W 2550 Australia Phone - 61 64 93 2347 I don't have exact prices but expect to pay $100-150US for a stylus replacement. They also make their own cartridges which you can audition by mail order. All work is guaranteed and my experience has been that these folk really know their craft. "Don't look at the trombones!
