I saw an interesting interview on TV (One of the A&E, Discovery, or Public TV
specials) with the pilot that shot down the plane with Adm. Yamamoto.  The 
Japanese plane was making a pass in front of him, and he decided to clear his
guns to make sure that they would not jam when he tried to take a shot.  This 
clearing burst was the burst that actually shot down the plane.
