I have been working on this same kind of approach for our two
networks.  I have found out that both CC:mail and DaVinci are in a
beta period on some SW that will allow a pc to accept novell mail and
turn it into smtp format mail.  The unix platform knows the ethernet
address of the gateway and mails directly to the gateway and vice
versa for the novell.  Latest I heard was that DaVinci was about a
month or two away from ending beta.  Maybe you can get more up to date
info.  Hope this helps.
