In insert mode, it will not allow me to a put "%" into the buffer. Instead, it just beeps at me. It doesn't return me to command mode mode, however. In command mode, the key is bound to vip-paren-match. Theoretically, that should have nothing to do with insert mode. Indeed, unsetting the key globally has no effect on this problem.
