Read gnu.announce . Apparantly, Unisys Corp. is saying that the alogarithm used by compress (LZT) was developed by Unisys and is now seeking a patent for it. According to them, it's "their" code and they're gonna make people pay to use it. All this after many years when peole have been using it freely. Until I heard about this, I thought compress was public domain or freely distributed BSD or AT&T code. Not even PKZIP is safe now. _______________________________________________________________________ ziegast@eng.umd.edu - {uunet}!eng.umd.edu!ziegast Eric W.
