There are intrinsic problems--like missing fonts-- and avoidable problems -- like the infamous, multi-versioned LaserPrep. This was also true of FORTRAN, another de facto, semi-proprietary standard. Adobe will tend to behave the same way IBM did with FORTRAN; they want it to be a de facto standard but they don't want to get carried away with clarifying the standard so as to make the cloners job easier. There is a PostScript users group, led by Terry Satterthwaite somewhere in S.F. They might be the logical group to clarify and enforce standards.
