SyQuest SQ555 drives fit in standard 5-1/4" HALF HEIGHT slots. > - Where can I get a cheap bare SyQuest mechanism with only the embedded SCSI > controller? (preferably the newer mechs with the 20ms access time and higher > MTBF rating, I think these have an orange LED???) How much $$$?? I believe that ALL SyQuest SQ555 drives have the same access time. It is true that some have a green & red pair of LED's while others have a green & amber set, but they are the same... just depends on which color is cheaper that week. > - Do SyQuest drives take 5/12 VDC like standard 5-1/4" floppies? SyQuest SQ555's have standard 4 pin power connectors: pin 1: +12 Volts DC pin 2: 12 V DC return Pin 3: 5 V DC return Pin 4: +5 V DC (Info from SQ555 Installation & Operation Guide P/N 58050-001 REV B. 7/89) You should be able to find SyQuest dealers in COMPUTER SHOPPER. Look in the back for the listings of advertisers... check under 2 categories... REMOVABLE MEDIA hard drives as well as the category which encompasses 44 Meg hard drives. I've seen prices advertised for $519... but you will need a SQ400 cartridge too! Make sure to get one! I've had the SyQuest for a few months now, I have 2 cartridges, and I love it. Haven't had any problems, and it is quite fast! Hope that helps, Jim Tauberg
