Hello, here is an answer for you on some of the questions you had.
First of all HDBACKUP is a front end for BRU and you definitely
should ask either a commodore employee (here) or the distribution
people there about that. Second of all, yes there is a way to get
at the tools menu. there is a new PD program called ADDTOOLS and
it's by the VirusX author Steve Tibbitts. It should be at a sight
somewhere. I cannot ftp, but know those who can, so I will suggest
to some one to get it up here. And with addtools programs don't have
to directly support it, you can use CLI utilities even or EXECUTE
batch files.. VLT works fine, don't know about JR COmm..
