Those areas can result in higher stats for the players you do take thru, but that's about it (or so I've heard). This game has been panned for the restriction you've pointed out and also for the fact that as your party gets better, so do the monsters, to the extent that you're slugging it out in 20-30 minute battles. I haven't gotten to that point yet, but it is worth knowing about before you invest a lot of time in the game...
