If you sit down in front of a typewriter, put in a piece of paper and type whatever you need to type, that's "typing" and, hence, you're a typist. If you sit down in front of a computer or a dedicated word processor and do whatever you need to do, you're a word processor. What's the difference? Equipment and knowledge of that equipment, mostly.
