Subject: numbering equations automatically in raw tex

Probably a novice question.  For various reasons I want to use raw TeX and
would like equations numbered automatically.  I know about \everydisplay so
can increment the label.  Also this is a document from tr2tex so I'd like
to avoid going through putting
\eqno\label
before every second $$.  Any neat solutions?
As usual e-mail and I'll summarize in the unlikely event of wide interest.
