Rick's answer -- chgrp backup /bin/df -- solved the problem.

I'd gotten a number of flames and compliments, both posted and emailed, from 
SCO and from its customers, and even a couple of suggestions, but this simple 
bit of advice 
  (a) was completely clear and not vague; and
  (b) solved the problem.
