is it impossible by design to invoke dos merge from a shell which has
been started via the "popen" call?

i can start a dos batch job or .exe file from within a bourne shell
script when i invoke the script by hand, but when the script is
started via the "popen" call from a process, the dos merge doesn't
even start.  

thanks in advance for any information about this...
