At least one difference to local lines is that the status of modem signals 
isn't carried over the LAT connection. I faintly remember that some tty 
shared use functionality was based on sensing the CD signal. (But no doubt
Matt has supplied the definitive answer even before this article gets 
propagated over the pond. :)
