Okay, the above shows us that you're talking about *GNU* Emacs.  I seem to
remember that ITS/Twenex Emacs had that default behavior, so it would
be understandable for GNU to do so as well.  I remember discovering that
gosmacs didn't have that default behavior.  *Please* be specific when
you're talking about "emacs".  Whatever your preferences, "emacs" does not
imply "GNU".
