Subject: plot library for PostScript?

I am looking for a postscript version of the the plot(1g) library
routines found in most Unix systems (or anything roughly equivalent).
Also, routines that, given a character string, scale factors, font
and orientation, return the dimensions of a box enclosing the string
(assuming the afm file is available).

Any language (well, almost...) will do. If it matters: DECstation 5000,
Ultrix 4.0.
