VM, a mailer that runs under GNU Emacs, in conjunction with the Emacs-Lisp package crypt.el, can be made to deal with mail in compressed, compacted or encrypted folders. Both VM and crypt.el are obtainable from me. Emacs you'll have to find for yourself. :)
