I don't urge abandonment, only awareness, caution, and responsibility. Just make sure your mail-based server can recognise a NZIC [Non-Zero Incremental Cost] link (easy, it's got a "!" in it) and refuses to send if it's not terminal. (1) There are many ways to build NZIC networks, and few of them use a "!" delimiter to mean the same thing as a UUCP-based network does. (2) Among the other features of the Domain Name System is its assistance in hiding such transport-level properties from applications.
