This question was asked because that's essentially what a dealer in my area told me. I received only 4 responses, with 3 out of 4 a resounding "no": Raymond Lang : |The general drift of the discussion seems to be that Apple has no |intentions of dropping the II line. In fact, they are actually |starting to support it more. It seems the II Infinitum letter campaign |had some effect, as well as their own observation that they were |losing the low end of the market (i.e., they realized that the Apple II |and the Mac were geared to different markets and that someone who |choses not to buy an Apple II is probably not going to chose a Mac |instead but rather another manufacturer's model). |The IIgs was one of the top 10 best selling models in 1989; in other |words, they're still making money on it---so why should they drop it. Phil McDunnough : | The rumour of the demise of the GS is not new, and is probably not true. |Apple has publicly said it would continue making, selling and improving the |GS while continuing to integrate it more closely with the Mac. | I am currently beta testing Public Folder GS. One will be able to boot the |GS from a non-dedicated Mac with System 7.0 and HyperCard-GS will be released |this year. | Of course anything is possible, but I highly suspect your dealer is not in |touch with the GS world(if he sells only a few a year->mainly selling Macs to |business. | What is "supposed" to happen in October is the introduction of the Ma |Mac Classic(an SE basically at a + price), a 20MHz version of the ci |with one slot and around $3500, a low cost 020 color Mac with a slot |for a //e board(priced around $1500 without the board but with 4 or |8 bit colour). "H. Grant Delaney" : |I don't know about the emulation board but sounds like the dealer is trying |to do a deal on you. No end for the apple II they sold more GSs than macs |last year although they made less money on them. dinl!inljeff.den.mmc.com!carnahan (Rich Carnahan): |I heard the same thing from our Apple Rep at Martin. He indicated the |Apple II emulator board would be introduced sometime early next year. |More's the pity. -- Ed Arnold * NCAR * POB 3000, Boulder, CO 80307-3000 * 303-497-1253(voice) 303-497-1137(fax) * era@ncar.ucar.edu [128.117.64.4] * era@ncario.BITNET era@ncar.UUCP * Edward.Arnold@f809.n104.z1.FIDONET.ORG
