There is nothing wrong with the various versions of zoo I was using---the problem was the way I was calling them from msh. I was typing zoo x//. filename instead of zoo 'x//.' filename . The quotes are necessary because "/" is the escape character in msh. I have been using Unix too long to think of anything except "\" as the escape.
