No, .Z means that the file is compressed with program compress. It's a unix software and has been ported to many systems, including ST. If "your" VAX has compress/uncompress program, you can use VAX to uncompress files. Another possibility is to get compress program from terminator and uncompress files on your ST. TAR is a program to pack many files into ine file for writing them to tape, for example. There is version of GNU TAR for ST too. TAR's file name extension is .TAR. Don't know about ST version, but a unix version of GNU TAR can also compress files while packing them.
