Does the VAX have an equivalent tar command ?? The tape was made using VMS' BACKUP utility. You have pretty much no hope of reading this with your hpux machine, as it contains all kinds of VMS specific file information. Since the data you wish to read is ascii, the sender needs to find some VMS utility to write an ascii tape. There is a utility called "twrite" on our VMS systems, which allows one to write either EBCDIC or ascii tapes.
