The problem turned out to be that I didn't have the DA Handler application in my system folder. (Silly me, it looked like it belonged in the Fonts/DAs folder...) A workaround suggested by many people was to hold down the Option key while selecting the desk accessory; this forces the accessory to open in the current application's memory, rather than using the DA Handler.
