AG> Why not just use a Postscript previewer under X? -- Because postscript previewers are very slow, even on somethine like a DECstation-3100, a zippy machine. Currently, 'xtex' will use display postscript to display figures if your server supports it. I have displayed such images on a DECstation-3100 and an IBM RS/6000. I have only compiled xtex on a 3100, because I couldn't get X11R4 for the 6000 easily. Shortly, or so the person working on it says, similar functionality will be possible with any X11 server using GhostScript 1.4, when it's released. This may be desirable in some ways, because it (ghostscript) eventually goes away, releasing the swap space that Display Postscript consumes for all time. I do not know when this will be done, but a notice will be posted, so please don't send me mail about this.
