I was under the false impression that as long as a resource was not set _specifically for this widget_, it would assume the default described in its defaults resource[] array. Since I had a "*foreground: black" in my ".Xdefaults" file, the dial widget never set the foreground to its internal default. Sorry to have bothered the net with this.
