What about developing a cynical or sarcastic attiude to the matter in question? Another way could be getting very involved in something so that you don't have to think about whatever it is that ails that person. Something I have seen very often is going into religion to an almost ridiculous extent. There's another very common way of coping: hitting the bottle. Others are seeking help as in support groups or psychologists.
