Well, *no* battlecruiser was really meant for close range -- the original
concept of the battlecruiser was to trade off protection, and to some
extent volume of fire (same guns but fewer), for speed.  The shambles
early at Jutland was a good demonstration of what happened when 
battlecruisers tried to play battleship.
