Has anyone given thought to the possible application of number theoretic
cryptoanalytic analysis to understanding biological neural networks?  It
seems to me that traffic analysis, chosen plaintext attack, and a few of
the more esoteric spread spectrum analysis techniques might be useful in
grappling with the sense of signals detected in natural neural networks.
