      2) The status line is getting a "D" at the beginning of the line instead of
      being displayed in reverse video.

   My Problem is similar: Using a 386-PC with Interactive 386ix 3.2 and
   GNU Emacs 18.55 I do NOT have problem no. 1) (as above), but problem
   no. 2), if the console (terminal at386) is used.

   Any help is welcome, thanks in advance!

Delete the "xt" entry from the terminfo entry for your terminal. Someone
messed up when they put this in for the AT386 entry, and its probably
true for several others.
