Subject: Does PBMPLUS work?

I can't get PBMPLUS to work on our UNIX machine.

I ftp'd it - OK
I uncompressed it  - OK
I untarred it - OK
I Makefiled it - OK
I ran 'giftoppm' - the output ppm went to screen 
I redirected the output to a file - gave an 'Inapproporiate I/O device' error
I ran 'macptopbm' - the output pbm went to screen
I redirected the output to a file - gave an 'Inapproporiate I/O device' error
I modified the C program version of 'giftoppm' to output directly to a file
Still gave an 'Inappropriate I/O device' error

Has anyone else had similar problems? Am I missing a patch? Is the program
faulty? Sould I try a different UNIX machine?
