The problem turns out to be due to loading AMCGDOS.PRG in my AUTO folder -- no AMCGDOS, no problem. I did verify that the VIP was not damaged -- running from the original disk (write-protected of course) showed the same problem. Also, ALTBOOT did not work with AMCGDOS installed -- I though ALTBOOT came first, but I will have to check.
