I dunno about independent places where you can get it repaired, but my 80 MB DirectDrive's CC died about a month ago, and I got through to them (with a bit of perseverance) without too much trouble. They replaced everything (CC, platter) & actually got it finished in about 3 weeks...as opposed to the 2 month turn-around time they mentioned originally.
